The First World War (for the contemporary World War) was the conflict began July 28, 1914 with the declaration of war on Serbia following the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria, made in Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzegovina), June 28, 1914. The bomber was the Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip, a student affiliated with the Black Hand. The conflict ended more than four years later, on 11 November 1918, with the surrender of Germany.
