The “death grip” problem is unfortunately real for the iPhone 4. When skin comes into contact with and bridges the two metal bands in the lower left corner of the iPhone, the displayed signal strength drops. This may or may not affect voice calls or data sessions on the iPhone. I’ve been able to replicate the signal drop, but haven’t experienced any actual performance problems. Others have reported dropped calls in areas with weak signal coverage when the antenna is obscured.
If the signal strength attenuates on your iPhone and you want to prevent this from happening, here are a handful of ways that do the trick:
1. Use a Bumper or Case: This is the official solution for the issue provided by Apple. Apple recommends that iPhone 4 owners buy a $30 bumper or other case, which alleviates the problem. It does what Apple says it does, but why is it the owner’s responsibility to fix it?
2. Hold It Different: When first questioned about the signal reception issues, Apple CEO Steve Jobs famously responded in an email to a customer that he was holding it incorrectly. His words were, “Avoid holding it that way.” This works, too, but could leave lefties in a lurch.
3. Use Duct Tape: This one is my favorite. Consumer Reports, which this week said it can’t recommend the iPhone 4 to consumers due to the “death grip” issue, suggested that users slap some duct tape on the section of the phone in question. This prevents your skin from touching the antenna and solves the problem. If duct tape can’t fix it, nothing can! Of course, your iPhone will gain a new level of street toughness with its taped-together look.
4. Use Any Other Type of Tape: I actually tested this. You can solve the problem with masking tape, electrical tape (my personal favorite, plus, it’s black), scotch tape, and packing tape (clear or brown). These solutions are better than duct tape, in my opinion, because they leave less of a sticky residue when the tape is removed from the iPhone.
5. Wait for Apple’s Software “Fix”: Apple has promised a software update to “solve” the antenna problem — only changing the number of bars displayed on the iPhone’s signal meter doesn’t actually change the physics involved with the antenna itself. This might help to change the perceived performance problem, but won’t prevent the iPhone 4′s signal from degrading when the antenna is covered up.

Eighteen people were killed and 57 others are missing as Tropical Storm Conson moved over the Philippines, the country’s National Disaster Coordinating Council reported Wednesday.
The storm, known locally as “Basyang,” had weakened slightly, the council said. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday (4 a.m. ET), its maximum sustained winds were at 53 mph (85 kph) near its center and gusts of up to 62 mph (100 kph).
Conson made landfall on the northern Philippine island of Luzon late Tuesday, about 41 miles (66 kilometers) east of the capital, Manila. It was back over the South China Sea, about 112 miles (180 kilometers) west of Iba, as of Wednesday afternoon.
Four people died when a warehouse under construction collapsed, the council said. Several people were hit by fallen debris and several others drowned. Twelve people were injured by debris. The missing included 25 fishermen.
Nearly 500 houses were reported damaged. Many were still without power, although it had been restored in some areas. More than 4,000 people were stranded in various ports, along with 26 vessels, the council said.
The storm is expected to move into southern China on Friday, but the Joint Typhoon Warning Center is predicting little or no intensification before landfall there. Heavy rain and flooding will be a concern for southern China.
The storm became the first typhoon of 2010 on Monday before losing some steam. While some flooding was reported after heavy rains, most roads and bridges were passable, the council said.

The mayor of an upscale Dallas suburb apparently shot her teenage daughter to death before fatally shooting herself, after leaving notes at their home warning officers about the scene they would find and outlining how to manage family affairs, police said Wednesday.
An envelope taped to the front door of Mayor Jayne Peters’ home contained a key to the house and a typed note advising police they would discover something unpleasant inside, Coppell Deputy Police Chief Steve Thomas said.
Three other notes contained instructions for handling affairs, such as taking care of the family dogs, but did not provide explanations for the deaths of the 55-year-old Peters and her 19-year-old daughter, Corinne.
“It appeared to me that there had been some thought,” Thomas said.
Police found the bodies Tuesday after the mayor failed to show up at a city council meeting. They said the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Wednesday that the case should be officially classified as a homicide-suicide investigation.
“Forensic tests (and) procedures performed point to Corinne being the victim in this tragedy, with Mayor Peters subsequently taking her own life,” police said in a statement. “Both of the fatal injuries are a result of a single gun shot wounds.”
Thomas said the weapon was a semiautomatic handgun and there were no signs of a struggle.
“Everybody in the room is like, ‘Did we miss a sign?’” Bob Mahalik, mayor pro tem who is now acting mayor of the city, said of council members’ reaction to the deaths. “It’s hard to wrap your arms around it.”
Mahalik said he had a gut feeling something wasn’t right when the mayor didn’t turn up for the meeting.
“But nowhere in your wildest dreams did you think it would be that far not right,” he said.
A small collection of flowers, wreaths and cards decorated the front porch of the Peters’ 3,850 square-foot brick home, where the mayor and her daughter lived alone. A printed letter said: “Please know that you are loved no matter what happens. I know that God is with you and giving you comfort. You both are with Don, a wonderful husband and father. A family again.”
The mayor’s husband, Donald Peters, died of cancer in 2008 at the age of 58.
Jayne Peters was a contract software developer who served as mayor of Coppell, a city of about 40,000 located 15 miles northwest of Dallas, for the past year. Her term was to expire in 2012. She had been a council member since 1998.
“This is a tremendous loss for the city, the community and the region,” said City Manager Clay Phillips.
The elder Peters attended Miami University in Ohio. In her official biography on the city’s website, she said “Coppell is a community with a huge heart, and we take care of one another.”
“She enjoyed what she was doing as mayor and she was good at what she did,” said Mahalik, who last saw Peters waving and passing out candy at the city’s Independence Day parade. “She attended almost everything, every ribbon-cutting, speaking at the schools, the chamber, regional meetings.”
Todd Storch, of Coppell, had known Peters for about a year. When his 13-year-old daughter died in a skiing accident in March, Peters was there for him and his family and later took a spot on the foundation he formed in his daughter’s name to increase awareness for organ donation.
“She was just one of those rocks that was always there. We kind of grieved together,” Storch said.
Corinne Peters graduated from Coppell High School this year. A classmate said she was bound for the University of Texas at Austin, and neighbors said the mother and daughter seemed happy.
Her Facebook page shows a smiling girl in a white top and details her interests in movies and television comedies.
“Corinne was an outstanding student and gifted dancer with a big heart,” said Jessica Doty, a spokeswoman for the Coppell school district. Doty called Jayne Peters a “dedicated school volunteer.”
A close friend, Ashley Johnson, said Corinne loved animals and was a phenomenal ballet dancer. There were no signs of serious strain between Corinne and her mother, Johnson said.
“Her and her mom fought sometimes, but it was like a normal teenager and mom relationship,” Johnson said. “I never would have thought this would have happened.”
Neighbor Diane Ianni said Corinne was excited about enrolling at Texas and frequently donned shirts with the university’s logo and colors.
She said when she last saw Corinne the teen was upset about having to miss at least two different summer orientation sessions at the Austin campus, the last time because her mom was having problems with her eye and had to go to a doctor’s appointment. But she said Corinne recovered and had been back to her happy self.

Jayne Peters, the mayor of Coppell, Texas, was found dead last night at her home outside Dallas, CBS News reports.
After Peters didn’t show up for city council meeting, police went to her house. They found the 55-year-old and her 19-year-old daughter Corinne dead, both with gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators have said the incident may be a murder-suicide case.
Though the cause of the shooting is unclear, investigators say Peters may have shot her daughter before committing suicide. The authorities wouldn’t comment further, and autopsies haven’t been completed.

Drew Brees is the big winner at the ESPY Awards, collecting four trophies, including male athlete of the year.
The New Orleans Saints quarterback also won best championship performance, NFL player and shared the team award with his Super Bowl champion colleagues.
Skiier Lindsey Vonn won female athlete of the year honors Wednesday night at the show hosted by “Saturday Night Live” comic Seth Meyers and aired live on ESPN from the Nokia Theatre.
Vonn was also chosen best female Olympian.
Landon Donovan of the U.S. national soccer team picked up three trophies, for best moment in a World Cup game against Algeria, best MLS player and the performance under pressure award.

Ah, young love. After weeks of rumors, Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston tell Us Weekly they are getting married — with or without the approval of the bride’s mother, Sarah Palin.
The pair say they reconnected about three months ago while working out a custody agreement for their 18-month-old son, Tripp. “I really thought we were over,” Johnston, 20, tells the magazine, which puts the formerly star-crossed lovers on the cover. But after a walk, Bristol says, she was stunned how different her former fiancé was. Later, Johnston texted her: “I miss you. I love you. I want to be with you again.” “I was in shock,” says Bristol, 19.
According to the magazine, Johnston and Palin secretly got engaged two weeks ago. Perhaps that explains the public apology that Johnston issued last week via People magazine , for lying about the Palin family. (No word yet on what celebrity periodical will be catering the reception, but our money is on OK!)
There’s still no word on how that was received, but maybe we have a clue: Bristol is only now telling her mom, via a tabloid magazine, that she’s getting married. “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be,” Bristol says. “Hopefully she will jump on board.”

OVERVIEW OF BASTILLE DAY
Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. It is called Fête Nationale (National Holiday) in France. It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the Fête de la Fédération was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern French “nation,” and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution.
HISTORY OF BASTILLE DAY
The Storming of the Bastille
On 5 May 1789, Louis XVI convened the Estates-General to hear their grievances. The deputies of the Third Estate representing the common people (the two others were clergy and nobility) decided to break away and form a National Assembly.
On 20 June the deputies of the Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath (named after the place where they had gathered which was a place where an ancestor of tennis, the “jeu de paume” was played), swearing not to separate until a Constitution had been established. To show their support, the people of Paris stormed the Bastille, a prison where people were jailed by arbitrary decision of the King (lettre de cachet). The Bastille was, in particular, known for holding political prisoners whose writings had displeased the royal government. Thus the Bastille was a symbol of the absolutism of the monarchy.
There were only 7 inmates housed at the time of the siege. The storming of the Bastille was more important as a rallying point and symbolic act of rebellion than a practical act of defiance. No less important in the history of France, it was not the image typically conjured up of courageous French patriots storming the Bastille and freeing hundreds of oppressed peasants. However, it did immediately inspire preparations amongst the peasants for the very real threat of retaliation.
Shortly after the storming of the Bastille, on 26 August, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was proclaimed.
History of the Celebration
On 30 June 1878, a feast had been set in Paris by official decision to honour the Republic (the event was immortalised by a painting by Claude Monet). On the 14 July 1879, another feast took place, with a semi-official aspect; the events of the day included a military review in Longchamp, a reception in the Chambre of Deputies, organised and presided by Léon Gambetta, and a Republican Feast in the pré Catelan with Louis Blanc and Victor Hugo. All through France, as Le Figaro wrote on the 16, “people feasted a lot to honour the Bastille”.
On the 21 May 1880, Benjamin Raspail presented a law proposal to have “the Republic choose the 14 July as a yearly national holiday”. The Assembly voted the text on 21 May and 8 June. The Senate approved on 27 and 29 June, favouring 14 July against 4 August (honouring the end of the feudal system on 4 August 1789). The law was made official on 6 July 1880, and the Ministry of the Interior recommended to the prefects that the day should be “celebrated with all the brilliance that the local ressources allow”. Indeed, the celebrations of the new holiday in 1880 were particularly magnificent.
BASTILLE DAY TRIVIA
Current festivities
14 July is the French national day, simply called Fête nationale or 14 juillet (though it is generally referred to as Bastille Day in English). Many cities hold fireworks during the night. It is also customary that firefighters organise dancing parties (bals du 14 juillet).
The day officially celebrates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, though it is often associated, even in France, with the Storming of the Bastille.
Military parades are held on the morning of 14 July, the largest of which takes place on the Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris in front of the President of the Republic.
The parade opens with cadets from certain schools (École Polytechnique, Saint-Cyr, École Navale, and so forth), then other infantry troops, then motorised troops; aviation of the Patrouille de France flies above. In recent times, it has become customary to invite units from France’s close allies into the parade; for instance, in 2002, cadets from the United States Military Academy paraded.
The parade also involves the French Republican Guard, and occasionally (non-military) police units; it always ends with the much-cheered and popular Paris Fire Brigade (which, exceptionally, has military status in France). Traditionally, the students of the École Polytechnique set up some form of joke.
The president then gives an interview to members of the press, discussing the situation of the country, recent events and projects for the future. He also holds a garden party at the Palais de l’Elisée.
Bastille Day also falls during the running of the Tour de France, and is traditionally the day upon which French riders will make a special effort to take a stage victory for France.

A billboard created by an Iowa tea party group that compares President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin is drawing sharp criticism — even from fellow tea party activists who have condemned it as offensive and a waste of money.
The North Iowa Tea Party began displaying the billboard in downtown Mason City last week. The sign shows large photographs of Obama, Nazi leader Hitler and communist leader Lenin beneath the labels “Democrat Socialism,” “National Socialism,” and “Marxist Socialism.”Beneath the photos is the phrase, “Radical leaders prey on the fearful & naive.”
The co-founder of the roughly 200-person group said the billboard was intended to send an anti-socialist message. But Bob Johnson admitted Tuesday that the message may have gotten lost amid the images of fascist and communist leaders.”The purpose of the billboard was to draw attention to the socialism. It seems to have been lost in the visuals,” Johnson said. “The pictures overwhelmed the message. The message is socialism.” He said he didn’t know of any plans to remove the sign.But others in the tea party movement criticized the sign.”That’s just a waste of money, time, resources and it’s not going to further our cause,” said Shelby Blakely, a leaders of the Tea Party Patriots, a national group. “It’s not going to help our cause. It’s going to make people think that the tea party is full of a bunch of right-wing fringe people, and that’s not true.”Blakely also expressed outrage at linking Obama to Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany who oversaw the killing of 6 million Jews and whose invasions of neighboring countries led to World War II.”When you compare Obama to Hitler, that to me does a disservice to the Jews who both survived and died in the Holocaust and to the Germans who lived under Nazi regime rule,” Blakely said.John White, an Iowa coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots, said that he can understand the North Iowa group’s perception that Obama is “Hitler-esque,” but he thinks the billboard is offensive and unproductive. White said that he planned to discuss the matter with national tea party officials.
“I fear they may end up in some kind of trouble over it, because it’s basically slanderous,” White said. “I don’t know that it’s the message we want to send. I’d much rather see billboards that say ‘Remember in November. Get Out and Vote.’”The billboard is owned by Waitt Outdoor of Omaha, Neb. Waitt general manager, Kent Beatty, said the company didn’t have a problem with the message.”We believe in freedom of speech,” Beatty said. “It doesn’t reflect our views, necessarily.”
The White House declined to comment on the sign.One person who welcomed the billboard was Dean Genth, a Democratic activist from Mason City, a city of 30,000 people just south of the Minnesota border, who said he thinks the sign lays bare the views of tea party supporters.”I welcome them to continue to spew that kind of stuff because I think it’s going to do a lot of good for the good Democrats around the state,” Genth said.

The odds that Joan Ginther would hit four Texas Lottery jackpots for a combined nearly $21 million are astronomical. Mathematicians say the chances are as slim as 1 in 18 septillion — that’s 18 and 24 zeros.
Just as unlikely? Getting to know one of the luckiest women in the world.
“She wants her privacy,” friend Cris Carmona said.
On a $50 scratch-off ticket bought in this rural farming community, Ginther won $10 million last month in her biggest windfall yet. But it was the fourth winning ticket in Texas for the 63-year-old former college professor since 1993, when Ginther split an $11 million jackpot and became the most famous native in Bishop history.
But she’s a celebrity who few in this town of 3,300 people can say much about.
“That lady is pretty much scarce to everybody,” said Lucas Ray Cruz, Ginther’s former neighbor. “That’s just the way she is.”
At the Times Market where Ginther bought her last two winning tickets, the highway gas station is fast becoming a pilgrimage for unlucky lottery losers. Lines stretch deep past a $5.98 bin of Mexican movie DVDs, and a woman from Rhode Island called last week asking to buy tickets from the charmed store through the mail.
She was told that was illegal. The woman called back to plead again anyway.
The Texas Lottery Commission has seen repeat winners before, but none on the scale of Ginther. Spokesman Bobby Heith said the agency has never investigated Ginther’s winnings — three scratch-off tickets and one lottery draw — for possible fraud but described the verification system as thorough. Her other winnings — both from scratch-off tickets — were $2 million in 2006 and $3 million in 2008.
So how did Ginther do it, then?
Good luck pinning her down to ask.
Ginther has never spoken publicly about her lotto winnings and could not be found for comment. She now lives in Las Vegas after moving away from Bishop, and an answering machine message for a telephone number listed at her address says not to leave a message.
She asked the few people who’ve exchanged more than brief pleasantries with her not to grant interviews and sneaked into lottery headquarters in Austin to collect her winnings with the least publicity the state offers jackpot winners.
But spend a few hours in her hometown — and equal time scouring public records — and a contrasting profile emerges.
Her home address in Las Vegas is on a street called Paradise Drive. When USA Today asked readers in 2000 to sound off on airline service, Ginther groaned over a flight attendant who carted away her cheese and crackers and a sundae too soon. Two years later, she grumbled to the Las Vegas Review-Journal about a proposed monorail running through her exclusive condominium towers.
“I moved here because I wanted to have a beautiful home with a great view and that’s what I have. I didn’t expect to have a monorail come down here with thousands of tourists every day,” Ginther told the newspaper, in what might have been the only time she was directly quoted in the media.
Nitpicking first-class service, and mad the view in her luxury home might be spoiled?
Bishop residents may not know much about Ginther — but they know that’s not her.
Here around the cotton farms and boarded-up downtown, Ginther, who over the years regularly visited the town to see her father who died in 2007, is called benevolent as much as she’s called lucky. They say she bought the church a van. Gave money to the family that runs the Days Inn off the highway. When she moved, she donated her home to charity.
Sun Bae, who owns the Time Market and sold Ginther her last two winning tickets, said she drives around in a bland Nissan sedan but once bought a nicer car for someone down on their luck. Bae said Ginther doesn’t even own a cell phone.
“She is a very generous woman. She’s helped so many people,” Bae said.
Calculating the actual odds of Ginther hitting four multimillion-dollar lottery jackpots is tricky. If Ginther’s winning tickets were the only four she ever bought, the odds would be one in 18 septillion, according to Sandy Norman and Eduardo Duenez, math professors at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Exactly how often Ginther plays is unknown. But Norman and Duenez said that a habitual player winning four times over a 17-year span is much less far-fetched.
At the Times Market, Bae and store regular Gloria Gonzalez said they’ve certainly watched Ginther buy her share of tickets over the years. And not just for her.
Gonzalez said when her elderly father would sit at the store’s window booth and scrub through dollar scratch-offs, Ginther would surprise him with a $50 ream of tickets.
“Win, win, win,” Ginther would chant, rooting him on.
After all, the only way to win is to keep playing. Ginther is smart enough to know that’s how you beat the odds: she earned her doctorate from Stanford University in 1976, then spent a decade on faculty at several colleges in California.
