Journolist Ezra Klein Out Of Bounds
Ezra Klein | Journolist Ezra Klein Wiki | Ezra Klein Biography | Journolist Ezra Klein Out Of Bounds
This may be the most embarrassing thing I have ever written — and looking back on my writing, there is a lot of competition for that dubious distinction — but when I became a reporter, it was almost a holy calling.
We really believed we were doing good. We informed the public and helped make democracy work. We exposed wrongdoing wherever we found it. We reported without fear or favor. As a columnist, I tried to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
I warned you that this would be embarrassing.
We loved what we did, and we did it with passion. We were proud. We felt — I am just going to go ahead and say it — honorable.
There were wrongdoers. Fakers, plagiarists, those with private agendas who wished to slant the news. When found, they were often fired. Even when they were subjected to a lesser punishment, their sins were made clear as a lesson to the rest of us. (At a few papers, those who wished to slant the news were publishers or editors who wished to please their publishers. They were rarely fired. But their numbers were few.)
The lines were not muddy. You played it straight. Even if you were a columnist and allowed to publish your opinions, you were expected to be fair and accurate.
At the end of the day, you often went home feeling good. And when people asked what you did, you replied with pride, not shame.
It was, as I said, almost a holy calling. (And often accompanied by a vow of poverty.)
Somewhere along the way, things have gone terribly wrong. Journalism has become a toy, an electronic plaything. I do not blame technology. The giant megaphone of technology has been coupled with a new, angrier, more destructive age. (Yes, you can find extremely angry, extremely partisan times in our past, but I always thought the goal was to progress over the centuries, not regress.)
Until recently, there was a semisecret, off-the-record organization called Journolist. It was a listserv, which is a bunch of people who sign up (if allowed) and then get the same e-mails and can reply to everybody on the list.
Journolist was founded by Ezra Klein in early 2007, when he was 22 and working for the liberal publication The American Prospect. Klein continued running it when he went to The Washington Post in 2009. The Post is a mainstream publication, but Journolist was limited to those “from nonpartisan to liberal, center to left.”
Klein determined who would get on Journolist — political reporters, academics, think tank members, left-wing bloggers — and it grew from a manageable 30 members to a pretty unmanageable 400. There was no censorship, but if Klein felt you had gone too far, he would tell you to stop it. You could be threatened with expulsion, but nobody was ever expelled.
The first story revealing the existence of Journolist was printed by POLITICO in March 2009, but while the names of a few members (including three people at POLITICO) were revealed, and some talked about it, most would not. (I was never a member and learned about it when the public did.) No actual e-mails were printed.

USA Top 5 Largest Land Owners
Top 5 Land owners Of America | USA Top 5 Largest Land Owners
No. 1: Ted Turner
Ted Turner owns 2 million acres in New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Florida and several other states. If $1 billion is the dividing line between rich and real money, then owning multiple Rhode Islands is the definition of a land baron. Turner has close to three of them, including the spectacular Vermejo Park Ranch straddling the border of New Mexico and Colorado, which would practically cover the Ocean State. Turner made his money with CNN and lost much of it by selling out to AOL Time Warner. Land has worked out better for him. We estimate his holdings to be worth at least $1 billion.
No. 2: Archie ‘Red’ Emmerson
Archie Emmerson’s holdings include 1.9 million acres of timberland in California and Washington. In 1949 Emmerson and his father, Curly, leased a sawmill and built the business into Sierra Pacific Industries. Emmerson borrowed $460 million to buy 522,000 acres in California, a position since increased to almost 2 million acres. When he was briefly the nation’s largest private landowner, Emmerson joked that Ted Turner “will probably go out and buy more land.” He was right, but Emmerson is close behind.
No. 3: Brad Kelley
Brad Kelley holds 1.7 million acres in Florida, Texas and New Mexico. This Nashville, Tenn., farmer’s son sold his Commonwealth Brands cigarette company for $1 billion in 2001 and began investing in land. Big time. Kelley declined to comment, but The Land Report estimates he owns 1.7 million acres, and news reports suggest his representatives are busy acquiring ranches in the Big Bend area of southwest Texas.
No. 4: Irving family
The Irving family owns 1.25 million acres of timberland in Maine. These Canadian descendants of a Scottish sawmill operator are secretive and all business. They’ve amassed roughly one-twentieth of the state, and a fair amount of criticism from lawmakers who oppose their use of imported Canadian crews to harvest lumber.

No. 5: Singleton family
The Singleton family owns 1.1 million acres of ranchland in New Mexico and California. Henry Singleton was a brilliant engineer who co-founded Teledyne and began buying land in New Mexico the mid-1980s. Now his heirs run the massive Singleton Ranches, headquartered in Santa Fe, N.M., and one of the nation’s biggest cattle-and horse-breeding operations.
Abelino Mazaniego Dead Video Tape
Abelino Mazaniego Dead Video Tape | New Jersey Immigrant Abelino Mazaniego Death Video Tape | 3 NJ Teens Charged in Abelino Mazaniego Death
Dusk fell around Salvadoran immigrant Abelino Mazaniego as he sat on a bench on a promenade in an upscale New York suburb after finishing his restaurant shift. As night encroached, so did a group of teenagers, including one with a cell phone videocamera at the ready.
Then, authorities say, they beat him unconscious, with the camera rolling.
Days later, the 47-year-old father of four was dead — but not before the video had been circulated among teenagers in Summit, N.J., authorities say. And not before a nurse in the emergency room where he was taken the night of July 17 was accused of pilfering several hundred dollars from his wallet.
The attacks on Mazaniego’s body and dignity resulted in days of escalating court actions that culminated Tuesday in murder charges against three young men, ages 17, 18 and 19. A fourth teenager believed to have videotaped the attack hasn’t been charged, but authorities weren’t divulging details on the teen’s involvement or potential culpability.
In Summit on Tuesday evening, a young girl sobbed, trembled, and clutched the waist of an older woman as they stood in a group of five people in front of a shrine of sunflowers, votive prayer candles, handwritten notes and a photo of Mazaniego that had been placed on the bench where he was attacked. Speaking quietly in Spanish, a woman with red-rimmed eyes said she was Mazaniego’s wife of 29 years, and the rest were family members. She declined to give her name, saying she was too upset and scared to speak about the attack.
Mazaniego was “a hardworking, punctual, friendly employee,” said Colin Crasto, manager and chef at Dabbawalla Indian restaurant, across the street from where the attack took place, and where the victim had worked for three years as a cook’s assistant. A photo of Mazaniego was taped to the front window, with a message saying he had been the sole supporter of his family and asking patrons to donate money to help his family.
Along Summit’s main thoroughfare, a place of upscale clothing and jewelry stores, real-estate brokerages advertising million-dollar homes, and luxury SUVS parked along the street, merchants and residents said the attack was an anomaly for the town, a vibrant mix of nationalities that considers itself welcoming of immigrants.
“I know bad things happen all the time, everywhere, but it’s unusual here,” said Neil Rodriguez, the manager of The Wine List, who knew Mazaniego, as he worked a few doors down. Recalling Mazaniego as a “genial, really nice gentlemen,” Rodriguez said that, as a Hispanic, he was bothered that the incident was being portrayed by some as racially motivated.
“It’s a random act of violence, there’s not a lot of racial strife in this town,” he said. “I’d like to see the parents that produced such monsters,” he added, referring to the alleged attackers.
Khayri Williams-Clark, 18, and an unidentified 17-year-old, both of Summit, were arrested Wednesday on manslaughter charges. Williams-Clark pleaded not guilty to the charge Friday.
Now they’re charged with murder, along with Nigel Dumas, 19, of Morristown. A spokesman for the public defender’s office, which is representing Williams-Clark and the 17-year-old, declined to comment Tuesday and said the office hadn’t yet received an application to represent Dumas.
The 17-year-old is being held in the Union County juvenile detention center, while Williams-Clark is being held at the Union County jail on $100,000 bail, prosecutors said. Bail for Dumas, at the same jail, has been set at $250,000. Authorities wouldn’t say how many teens were in the group or whether there would be more charges. They also weren’t discussing theories on the motive for the beating — whether it was Mazaniego’s background, a thrill killing or some other reason.
But it apparently wasn’t an attempt to get the $640 in cash that Mazaniego was carrying.
Police found the victim after the beating and took him to the hospital, where, officials say, nurse Stephan Randolph, 39, of Flemington, took the money out of the unconscious victim’s wallet.
Family members noticed the missing money and told authorities, who charged Randolph with third-degree theft Monday, six days after Mazaniego died.
Randolph could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press this week; a phone listed in his name rang unanswered.

Highest Paid CEO Larry Ellison Wiki
Larry Ellison | Oracle Larry Ellison | Highest Paid CEO Larry Ellison Wiki | Oracle Larry Ellison Biography
Larry Ellison, founder and chief executive of software maker Oracle Corp. (NasdaqGS:ORCL - News), topped the list of best-paid executives of public companies during the past decade, receiving $1.84 billion in compensation, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of CEO pay.
Coming in No. 2 on the compensation list was Barry Diller, who received roughly $1.14 billion from IAC/InterActive and Expedia.com, the online travel site IAC spun off in 2005, where he remains chairman.
Following Mr. Diller were Occidental Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: OXY - News) CEO Ray Irani at $857 million, Apple Inc.’s (NasdaqGS: AAPL -News) Steve Jobs with $749 million and, in fifth place, Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE: COF -News) CEO Richard Fairbank at $569 million.
Four of the top 25 CEOs worked at financial companies, two on Wall Street: former Lehman Brothers (Other OTC: LEHMQ.PK - News) CEO Richard S. Fuld, at No. 11 with $457 million, and former Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C - News) CEO Sandy Weill, who ranked 19th at $361 million. The others were Mr. Fairbank and former Countrywide Financial Corp. CEO Angelo Mozilo.
The Journal analysis includes salaries, bonuses, perks and realized gains on both restricted stock and stock options; it excludes new grants of restricted stock and stock options. The analysis didn’t track whether executives sold shares they acquired after they exercised stock options or after previously restricted stock vested.
The survey shows that only some of the best-paid executives in the decade oversaw great stock gains for shareholders.
The size of executive pay packages, and the ways companies try to align executive pay to shareholder returns, became a heated political topic at several points in the last 10 years, especially in the wake of accounting scandals early in the decade and the Wall Street collapse of 2008. Critics say stock options sometimes work too well-pushing executives to make risky moves that lift the stock price in the short run, but ultimately hurt the company.
Oracle shareholders saw the value of their stock triple, while shareholders of Apple saw their stock soar nearly 12 times over. But shareholders of another tech giant, Dell Inc. (NasdaqGS: DELL - News), lost 66% of the value of their stock during the decade, while CEO Michael Dell, who launched the computer maker in his dorm room in the 1980s, brought home $454 million.
Four of the 10 highest-earning executives ran companies whose shareholders lost money over the decade: IAC/InterActive, Countrywide, Capital One and Cendant Corp.
The disparity between those CEOs’ fortunes and those of their shareholders is “pretty depressing,” and “suggests there’s a fair amount of pay without performance,” said Jesse Fried, a law professor at Harvard University and co-author of a 2004 book, “Pay Without Performance: The Unfulfilled Promise of Executive Compensation.” But Steven Kaplan, a professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, said that in general, “the guys who got the big payoffs deliver.”
Consider Mr. Ellison, a 65-year-old sailing enthusiast who founded Oracle in 1977. In the 10 years ended May 31, 2009, the most recent fiscal year for which Oracle has disclosed pay data, its market capitalization nearly tripled, to $98 billion, from $36 billion.
It has since risen further. Mr. Ellison’s 23% stake in Oracle is valued at roughly $28.8 billion. Realized gains on options accounted for 97% of Mr. Ellison’s total compensation.
An Oracle spokeswoman declined to comment.
Mr. Diller of IAC and a spokeswoman for Capital One’s Mr. Fairbank say their compensation reflects solid returns for shareholders over earlier periods.
For example, Mr. Diller in 2005 exercised more than 22 million IAC and Expedia stock options that had been granted in 1995, recording a paper gain of $463 million; he still holds the shares. Over that period, IAC stock rose more than four-fold.
“I did exactly as well as shareholders during the exact same counting period,” Mr. Diller said in an interview. “If you’re thinking of alignment with shareholders, I can’t imagine a more aligned system.”
Mr. Fairbank also recognized big gains from options granted in 1995 and exercised in 2005; he took in $249 million that year, nearly half his total for the decade. Over the period of 1995 to 2005, Capital One shares rose eightfold. Mr. Fairbank hasn’t been paid a salary or bonus since 1997, a spokeswoman said.
The stocks of Countrywide and Lehman Brothers, meanwhile, soared for years before the housing slowdown and financial crisis. That allowed Mr. Mozilo, the former CEO of Countrywide, and Mr. Fuld, the former Lehman CEO, to reap big gains on options before their companies faltered.
Mr. Mozilo’s attorney, David Siegel, didn’t respond to requests for comment. Former Cendant CEO Henry Silverman didn’t return calls. Mr. Fuld’s attorney, Patricia Hynes, said in an email that the Journal should exclude Mr. Fuld’s gains on stock and stock-option grants prior to 2000; she didn’t respond to requests for further comment.
Even at some companies that have done well, some shareholders say the CEO is paid too much. Occidental shares rose more than sevenfold in the past decade. But shareholders in May opposed the oil company’s executive-pay plan in a nonbinding vote.
Investors who campaigned against Occidental’s pay plan say the CEO, Mr. Irani, was paid roughly three times as much as other oil-company executives. They contend the board sets his pay too high and his performance targets too low.
An Occidental spokesman said company directors believe in “excellent pay for excellent performance.” Most of Mr. Irani’s pay is tied to Occidental’s operating results and share price, the spokesman noted, and all of his stock and option awards are now linked either to operating results or share price.
A Dell spokesman said most of Mr. Dell’s compensation reflected gains on options granted in the 1990s, when Dell’s stock price soared. He noted that Mr. Dell hasn’t received a bonus for four years and hasn’t been granted stock or stock options for six years.
Changes in executive-pay systems beginning in the 1980s were aimed at better aligning the fortunes of CEOs and their shareholders.
Salaries were restricted and executives were given more of their pay in stock options, which have value only if the company’s share price rises.
Stock options give holders the right to buy shares at a specified price, known as the strike price. Options are generally granted for a seven-to-10-year period at a strike price equal to the share price on the grant date. Options accounted for 78% of pay for the top 25 earners in The Wall Street Journal analysis.
Looking at pay over a decade is intended to smooth out year-to-year fluctuations. But there remain mismatches between when pay was awarded and when it was received.
With so much pay linked to stock prices, executives’ total compensation in the analysis varied depending on when they realized gains on options or restricted shares. Many of the top-earning executives exercised stock options in years when stock prices were relatively high, such as 2000, 2005 and 2007. Many of those options were granted in the 1990s.
By contrast, compensation for the group fell last year, when few executives exercised options at relatively depressed share prices. Mr. Ellison, for example, gained about $700 million from exercising options in January 2001, when Oracle’s stock was near the dot-com era highs. But the following year his pay was almost nil.
The financial-reform bill signed last week by President Barack Obama gives shareholders of all companies a periodic, nonbinding vote on their corporation’s executive-pay plan and requires companies to disclose the disparity between the CEO’s pay and that of other employees.
Several of the nation’s wealthiest executives weren’t among the top earners. Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A - News) receives only nominal compensation. Microsoft (NasdaqGS: MSFT - News) Chairman Bill Gates stepped down as CEO in January 2000, and retired as a Microsoft employee in 2008.
Apple’s Mr. Jobs also took a $1 annual salary throughout the decade. But he ranked fourth primarily because of a $647 million gain on restricted stock that was granted in 2003 and vested in 2006. He still holds the shares.
Apple directors gave Mr. Jobs the restricted stock in exchange for stock options that were then worthless, but which ultimately would have been worth more than the restricted stock had Mr. Jobs held them. Apple later acknowledged that some of the options exchanged for the restricted shares had been backdated, boosting their value, and restated its financial results. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.
Sixteen of the top 25 executives on the list were at their companies for the full decade, though not always as CEO. The top five headed their companies the entire period.
It was conducted by University of Southern California business professor Kevin Murphy, based on company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gains on restricted stock are included only for 2006 though 2009; companies didn’t have to report them for earlier yearSasural Genda Phool 28th July 2010 Watch Online

Plane crashes in Islamabad | Plane crashes in Pakistan | At least 20 killed in passenger plane crash in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: Rescue workers have recovered the bodies of at least 20 people from the wreckage of an Airblue passenger plane which crashed in the Margalla Hills in Islamabad on Wednesday, an official said.
“So far, rescue people have recovered at least 20 dead bodies,” Ramzan Sajid, a spokesman for Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority (CDA), told Reuters.
At least 157 people were on board the ABQ-202, a civil aviation official said.
The 157 included 151 passengers and six crew members, the official said. To view the passenger list, click here.
Rescue workers arrived at the scene and managed to pull out four injured passengers from under the rubble.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said five injured people were recovered from the site and were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Earlier, Imtiaz Inayat, a senior Islamabad municipal official, told a private television channel that up to five bodies had been recovered from the site of the crash.
“Several bodies are lying in the area. Four or five bodies have been taken,” Inayat said.
Separately, Imtiaz Elahi, chairman of the Capital Development Authority, said: We have sent fire engines to the site, so far five dead bodies have been recovered.
The total number of survivors was not immediately known, another local administration official said.
“Rescue teams have reached the area. They are fully equipped. They are scanning the entire area. Those wounded or survivors are being provided assistance and arrangements have been made to take them to hospitals.
“We are trying to get details about the passengers. It’s a big tragedy. It’s really a big tragedy,” he said.
Mubarik Shah, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority, said: We are gathering information. We have no more details.
The plane was flying from Karachi to Islamabad and the exact cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
The aircraft had lost contact with the control tower during the crash which occurred amid thick fog and heavy rainfall in Islamabad.
