Rocco Baldelli is Back

Rocco Baldelli is back on the playing field.

The former Hendricken star agreed with the Tampa Bay Rays on a minor-league contract on Monday, and he was assigned to the Class-A Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League.

Baldelli was in the lineup on Monday night, as a designated hitter in the sixth spot in the batting order, when the Stone Crabs hosted the Daytona Cubs. Baldelli struck out in all four plate appearances before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the 10th inning.

The Cumberland native and former Hendricken star rejoined the Rays as a special instructor during spring training. He had been taking batting practice and participating in drills before most Tampa Bay home games.

During an interview with The Journal in March, Baldelli said that he was only temporarily interrupting his playing career while he rehabbed a shoulder injury.

“I’m 28,” he said. “I don’t feel like I’m old. I still feel like I can swing the bat just fine, just as I have my entire career.”

The shoulder injury was the latest setback in the career of Baldelli, who burst onto the scene with Tampa Bay in 2003, hitting .289 with 11 homers, 78 RBI, 89 runs scored and 27 stolen bases. He finished third in the voting for American League Rookie of the Year, then had a similarly successful 2004 season, even earning comparisons to Joe DiMaggio.

But Baldelli missed all of 2005 with knee and elbow injuries. After playing well in 2006, he appeared in only 35 games in 2007 because of persistent hamstring injuries. In 2008 doctors found that his muscle problems and fatigue were linked to a mitochondrial disorder; the diagnosis was later changed to channelopathy.

Baldelli returned to the Rays in 2008, when the team reached the World Series. He played for the Red Sox in 2009, hitting .253 with seven homers and 23 RBI in 62 games.

“What’s happened with him physically doesn’t allow you to use him every day,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “But picking the right spots with this guy could be intriguing. He’s got enormous power as a hitter. He doesn’t run as well as he used to, but defensively you could use him in the outfield.”

“We’re excited for Rocco to continue his playing career,” Rays vice president for baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. “He still possesses the natural physical ability to help us down the stretch, but it will take some time to get him back into optimal playing shape for us to make the most informed decision possible.”

Maddon figures Baldelli could be ready in late August.

“I think that’s reasonable. That would be about 5 1/2 to six weeks,” the manager said. “By then, you would have a good indication of his abilities. And Rocco will be honest with us in regards to what he can do. If he thought he could be of use to us, he would tell us that.”

The Rays, who are leading the American League wild-card standings and continue to contend with the Yankees for the division title, have an obvious weakness on their bench. Their fourth outfielder is currently former Red Sox Gabe Kapler, who is batting just .223 with only five extra-base hits in 103 at-bats.

Andhra Jothi News on Chandrababu Naidu | Babli Project Andhra Jyothy Chandrababu Naidu Arrest News Updated

While the police in Aurangabad were making Barrack number 16 in Harsul prison ready to lodge Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu and party legislators, Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena staged protests and shouted slogans against Naidu in Aurangabad today.

Around 100 activists of Shiv Sena at Mantha Phata, led by former MLA of Jalna and ex-minister Arjun Khotkar, protested and shouted slogans against Naidu.

The police struggled to control the mob. Naidu, who is detained by Maharashtra police for violating prohibitory orders in his bid to reach Babhli dam, is expected to reach Aurangabad this evening.

Police sources said that while Naidu was being shifted to the Harsul Jail in Aurangabad, the bus carrying him was passing through the Mantha naka area when Khotkar and his activists staged protest and sported black flags at Naidu.

Similarly, MNS activists also shouted slogans against Naidu and his legislators arrested along with him.

Tight security arrangements have been made to control the situation as the Sena and MNS leaders had warned of protests against Naidu, the former AP chief minister.

Harsul central jail superintendent Bharat Bhonsle told reporters that two barracks have been kept ready for Naidu and his associates and security had been beefed up.

Naidu and his TDP legislators were sent to Aurangabad this morning in an air-conditioned bus.

Angela Ihegboro and Ben White Baby

Angela Ihegboro and Ben White Baby | Black Couple Ben and Angela Ihegboro gives birth to White baby Nmachi

A BLACK couple coo over their new baby yesterday – a white, blue-eyed BLONDE.

British Nmachi Ihegboro has amazed genetics experts who say the little girl is NOT an albino.

Dad Ben, 44, a customer services adviser, admitted: “We both just sat there after the birth staring at her.”

Mum Angela, 35, of Woolwich, South London, beamed as she said: “She’s beautiful – a miracle baby.”

Ben told yesterday how he was so shocked when Nmachi was born, he even joked: “Is she MINE?”

He added: “Actually, the first thing I did was look at her and say, ‘What the flip?’”

But as the baby’s older brother and sister – both black – crowded round the “little miracle” at their home in South London, Ben declared: “Of course she’s mine.”

Blue-eyed blonde Nmachi, whose name means “Beauty of God” in the Nigerian couple’s homeland, has baffled genetics experts because neither Ben nor wife Angela have ANY mixed-race family history.

Pale genes skipping generations before cropping up again could have explained the baby’s appearance.

Ben also stressed: “My wife is true to me. Even if she hadn’t been, the baby still wouldn’t look like that.

“We both just sat there after the birth staring at her for ages – not saying anything.”

Jenna lord cause of death news

Jenna Lord body found | Jenna Lord died in Camden, New Jersey | Jenna lord cause of death news

Police have identified the body of a missing mother found Sunday in a vacant lot in Camden, New Jersey.

A family member found the body of Jenna Lord, 23, of Collingdale, Pennsylvania, on Sunday in a vacant lot in Camden, according to Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. Family members and police had been searching the area.

Lord, described as a formerly troubled young woman who had recently begun to turn her life around, went missing over the July Fourth weekend. She was last seen the morning of July 5, waiting for a train home to Pennsylvania at the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden after attending a Fourth of July gathering the night before, according to her mother, Desiree Caruso.

Her body was dressed in the same clothes she was wearing when she went missing, Laughlin reported.

Caruso told HLN’s “Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell” that her daughter’s cell phone had died sometime over the weekend, and she used a man’s phone at the train station to call her mother. Caruso said she missed the phone call, but talked with the man afterward, who told her that her daughter “looked a little scared.”

The man told Caruso that he helped Lord buy a train ticket and waited with her until his train arrived.

“His train came a minute before hers, and he got on his train and I guess he figured she would get on her train, but she never got home,” Caruso said.

The man also said that Lord had been approached by another man, who told him he would make sure she got on her train, saying, “I got this,” according to Caruso.

Surveillance video apparently shows Lord walking around the train station with two men following “about 5 feet” behind her, according to Caruso, who had seen the footage.

“It looked like they were saying something to her,” Caruso said of the tape. “She looked back and then she just kept walking, and that’s the end [of the tape].”

The Camden, Gloucester and Salem County medical examiner said the cause of death is undetermined due to the body’s heavy state of decomposition, but there’s no evidence of foul play, Laughlin said in a written statement. Investigators aren’t able to conduct toxicology tests but are looking into whether other tests could determine how Lord died, Laughlin said.

Collingdale, Pennsylvania, Police Chief Robert Adams said Lord was reported missing from his town. Adams said the young mother attended a party in New Jersey and never returned home.

The family has said police were not helpful in searching for Lord. But Adams disputes that and said the case involved four jurisdictions and two states.

Adams said Lord, who has a young son, was scheduled to appear in court this week on charges of aggravated assault and theft in a neighboring town. She had not gone missing before, he said.

“This is not the conclusion I was not hoping for. I was hoping she’d be found in rehab or found alive and well,” he added.

Lord’s family has said police were hesitant to get involved because of her criminal past: She was arrested in 2006 for possession of marijuana and was arrested on assault charges earlier this year, Delaware County court records show.

But Caruso said Lord has been clean for six months, and had been reading the Bible daily and concentrating on being a mother to her 3-year-old son.

Camden Police Chief John Scott Thomson said in a statement Monday that his department “worked closely” with Lord’s family in the search for Lord.

“In addition to investigative efforts and continuous radio police broadcasts, Camden City police officers were on foot, distributing flyers and searching with family members during yesterday’s discovery,” Thomson said. “The Camden Police Department is assisting the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office with the investigation into Jenna’s cause of death.”
